Dr. Nico (N.G.) Hartwig, studied Medicine at the University of Amsterdam during 1979 – 1987. He graduated cum laude. He continued with a research fellowship at the Laboratory of Anatomy and Embryology at the University Leiden and wrote in 1992 his thesis “Pathoembryology: developmental processes and congenital malformations” promoted by Dr. Christel Vermeij-Keers.

Following his ambition to become a paediatrician he was elected for a pediatric residency at the ErasmusMC-Sophia Childrens Hospital under supervision of Prof. dr. HKA Visser and Prof. Dr. HJ Neijens. Finishing his residency in 1995 he followed a fellow training in pediatric infectious diseases and immunology under supervision of Prof. Dr. R. de Groot. During his academic career he wrote the pediatric antibiotic formulary which was followed nationwide.

Currently, he is working as a pediatric infectious disease consultant in a large teaching hospital and is responsible for the pediatric residency training in the Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland. He is a member of the Dutch Health Counsel advising the ministry of Health on vaccination strategies.
