Enzyme may reduce toxic effects of sugar
Reduce sugary foods and drinks is a key message from all health professionals to tackle the obesity epidemic.
Can you enjoy sugar without affecting your health?
A new study suggests this could be feasible.as researchers say a newly discovered enzyme may protect against the toxic effects of excess sugar.
This enzyme, called glycerol 3-phosphate phosphatase (G3PP), plays a central role in controlling glucose and fat utilisation. Led by Drs Marc Prentki and Murthy Madiraju, the research team demonstrated that G3PP can detoxify excess sugar from cells, and this discovery should lead to the development of therapeutics for obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers reveal the discovery of an enzyme called glycerol 3-phosphate phosphatase (G3PP) that clears excess sugar from cells, reducing the likelihood of toxicity from high glucose levels.
Study leaders Drs. Marc Prentki and Murthy Madiraju, from University of Montreal in Canada, and colleagues say their discovery paves the way for new treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes.
