Youth mental health – evidence highlights need for early interventions
Economic inactivity linked to youth mental health disorders in a new research study.
- a sevenfold increased risk of current suicidal ideation.
- a fourfold increased odds of being diagnosed with a mental disorder in childhood or early adolescence compared with their economically active peers.
-
almost threefold increased risk of any mental health disorder,
-
a twofold increased risk of anxiety disorder and
-
threefold increased odds of suicide attempts over their lifetime compared with economically active peers.
All findings reinforce the importance of early intervention to maximise the functional outcomes for adolescents with mental disorders and give these young people the best chance to get well and get on with having full, productive and normal lives’.
These findings are from a research paper about the association between economic inactivity and mental health among young people which features in a new, special edition of the Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine focused on youth mental health.
